The Cathédrale de Maguelone with beaches of thin sand
The visitor who discovers today the island of Maguelone and its solitary cathedral, like a huge stone ship stranded between the sea and the ponds, can not fail to be struck by the strangeness of the site and to wonder about the origins and fate of such a singular building. An unusual vision at first than that of a fortress church, mutilated and deprived of its towers, which seems to hide its wounds behind a curtain of old trees tortured by the sea wind.
The Place de la Comedie in Montpellier is the central square of the city, in the heart of what was the medieval city. It extends over an old space of fortifications that ends at the citadel of Montpellier (current high school Joffre) and the esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle in the East. Roughly rectangular and elongated, it is approximately 230 m long and 50 m wide. It forms with the esplanade (340 m long and 50 m wide), one of the largest pedestrian complex in France.
It takes its name from the municipal theater whose monumental facade adorns the south-west side of the square. Place de la Comedie is the hotspot, the center of all Montpellier activity and, in fact, it is a great pole of attraction but also the starting point for a more in-depth discovery of the historic city.
